After years of ignoring fan pleas to create a new Mega Man game, Capcom has finally decided to give their beloved Blue Bomber a second chance! Oh… wait, nevermind. This is not the Mega Man game we’ve all been asking for.
The new game, entitled Rockman X Over, is apparently a crossover that has all the different versions of Mega Man, ranging from his original incarnation all the way up to the ZX Biometal, teaming up for a new adventure. In addition to all the classic Mega Men, a new version of the hero (who’s dressed like a Japanese rock star from 10 years ago for some reason,) will also join the team.
It’s a potentially cool concept, but here’s where my excitement stops: it’s an iOS game, and not a particularly good looking iOS game at that. The screens released so far look like they were taken from a fan-game drawn in MS Paint, and I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I have absolutely zero interest in playing a Mega Man game with touch-screen based buttons.
Mega Man fans have been routinely ignored by Capcom ever since the Osaka based publisher cancelled the highly anticpated Mega Man Legends 3 for the 3DS last year. The series’ future was questioned when Mega Man’s creator Keiji Inafune quit the company last Fall, and this latest Mega Man “game” just seems like Capcom’s way of adding insult to injury. I still hope we’ll get a proper new Mega Man title someday (perhaps when Capcom gets some competent management,) but the chances of that game being made anytime soon seem to be growing slimmer and slimmer.
