In case you haven’t read enough about Sony this morning, there’s still a bit more PS4 news to share. Developer Digital Extremes, whom you may remember as the team behind The Darkness II and will certainly have forgotten for their work on Star Trek: The Video Game, have announced their free-to-play third-person shooter Warframe will arrive as a launch title to accompany the PS4’s release. The game, currently in open beta, is most notable for its unique character design.
I certainly like the idea of Sony getting behind more MMOs and free-to-play games as we head into a new generation of consoles. Sony’s been making a conscious effort to promote the PS4 as an all-inclusive system that will accommodate all types of gameplay experiences and genres, so this move is certainly evidence enough that they’re serious about it. A launch day free-to-play title is also an incredibly clever move to incentivize taking the plunge for early adopters; as it’s a guarantee they’ll have at least one more game to try out than they intended to purchase. With Warframe now and Diablo III before it, I’ll be interested to see what other types of non-traditional experiences Sony plans to bring to consoles next-generation.
Do you folks like the idea of bringing more free-to-play experiences to consoles? What types of PC or Mobile games would you be interested in seeing come to the PS4?
