Sonic Generations, Sega’s answer to criticism and 20 years of Sonic games has been announced already for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. It seems Sega wants to expand their user base even further by releasing the game on PC and the 3DS, which is pretty exciting news. All versions will be released in the Winter 2011 window, likely all on the same day.
This title will be unique to the Sonic franchise in that it features two game modes, classic 2D side-scrolling action, with 3D graphics and full on 3D action much like Sonic Adventure or the more recent HD iterations. This will be the first Sonic game released for the 3D handheld and it is likely the most interesting aspect of this new announcement as could literally add a new level to the traditional play mechanics of Sonic games.
I am not sure how well received it will be on the PC though as it seems to me most Sonic players generally stick to consoles, but there was Sonic CD, which was only available for PC and Sega CD/Mega CD drive. I have high hopes for this release and the holiday season can’t come soon enough. I will be picking it up for the 3DS.
