Breath of Fire was once one of the biggest J-RPG series’, but Capcom seemingly retired the franchise after the last game in the series, the underrated Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, failed to meet sales expectations. Fans have spent the better part of the last decade asking Capcom to bring the series back, and today, they finally acquiesced… Unfortunately, Breath of Fire 6 probably isn’t the sequel you were expecting or hoping for.
Breath of Fire 6 is a casual, online RPG designed specifically for touch-based interfaces. The game will feature hand-drawn, cutesy 2D graphics and customizable characters. While the game is being designed for tablets and smartphones first, it will also be ported to PC. BoF6 is scheduled to lower expectations sometime in 2014.
Now, I don’t want to sound like a total hater: there is a chance that Breath of Fire 6 could be a great game, but what they’ve shown of the game so far hasn’t exactly been inspiring. Previous attempts to recreate the console experience on a smartphone/tablet haven’t exactly resulted in great games either (*cough* Deus Ex: The Fall *cough*.) Of course, Dragon Quarter on the PS2 didn’t look like a proper Breath of Fire at first either, and that game is now regarded as a forgotten classic by hardcore J-RPG fans. Also, no good comes out of judging a game based on the hardware it’s on, so while there haven’t been any truly great J-RPG’s designed specifically for smartphones in the past, perhaps BoF6 will be the trailblazing first good one.
… I’m not saying that it’s likely that will happen (it isn’t,) but you shouldn’t completely rule out the possibility either.
