Kids and man-children everywhere spent the weekend speculating about how Pokemon X and Y’s new “Mega Evolutions” would work, and thanks to a new trailer released by Nintendo, now we know.
In order to “Mega Evolve,” the Pokemon need to hold a special “Mega Stone.” The Pokemon only evolve into their Mega forms during a fight, and they revert back to their normal forms following the end of the battle. It’s currently unknown if there’s a limit to how many times you can use each stone to mega evolve, or if Mega Evolving during battle takes up a turn.
Mega Evolutions were first revealed last week. When a Pokemon mega evolves, they gain boosted stats, new abilities, and in some cases, even change their types (Ampharos becomes an Electric/Dragon type when it turns into Mega Ampharos, for instance.)
Over the weekend, Nintendo also revealed the existence of Mega Kangaskhan at the world Pokemon Championships (yes, that’s a real thing.) The baby Kangaskan that rides in its pouch grows up a bit during its mega evolution, effectively turning Kangaskan into two Pokemon, which allows it to attack twice per turn. Sounds kind of over-powered if you ask me, but then again, Kangaskhan has never really been a top-tier monster, so maybe now it’ll be competitive option again.
People who pick up the next Pokemon game at launch (October 12,) will be able to download a special Torchic that comes pre-equipped with the Mega Stone that it will eventually need to evolve in Mega-Blaziken (you’ll need to level it up until it evolves into normal Blaziken first, however.)
